More adventures of the American aviator Angela Mc Cloud in the Pacific circa 1944. As the fighting grows increasingly fierce between Japan and the United States…
After emerging miraculously unharmed from a crash, when she was flying in the direction of Tinian Island (in the Mariana archipelago), Angela Mc Cloud finds herself entrusted with a mission of utmost importance. It consists of several reconnaissance flights off the coast of the island of Iwo Jima (Japan), in search of pilots who were able to eject from their aircraft during the battle that just took place between American and Japanese forces. It is at this time that she finds Rob, her ex-boyfriend who enlisted to defend the B-29 bombardiers (notably against kamikazes) that are on their way to the Land of the Rising Sun. But their reunion, on this island halfway across the world, is far from idyllic. Multiple pockets of resistance remain on Iwo Jima and the Japanese forces present on the island are more determined than ever to fight to the death.
With particularly intense air combat scenes, especially at the beginning of the comic book, this fifth volume falls in line with the previous four volumes. With the battle of Iwo Jima as the backdrop (directed by Clint Eastwood in the movie “Letters from Iwo Jima”), “Angel Wings – Black Sands” also recounts a harsher reality from the war in the Pacific.
