The great history of aviation explained to children over the age of 8 in a book that is fun, graphic, and educational.
Author of numerous novels and other non-fiction books for young people, Matt Ralphs has somehow remained a big kid at heart, the kind who lives on a boat called “Nostromo,” the name of the spaceship from the very first “Alien” (by Ridley Scott), released in 1979. Drawing on his passion for aircraft (even those from science fiction!), he set about writing a book to explain the fantastic history of aviation to children aged 8 and over. The result is “Les Avions, des tout premiers aéronefs aux avions de demain” (Airplanes, from the very first aircraft to the planes of tomorrow), a documentary-style book that explains how men and women managed to take to the skies—and how they will continue to do so.
To do this, the author started with the very first hot air balloon flight, in Versailles in 1783 by the Montgolfier brothers, and worked his way up to the aircraft that will fly tomorrow, passing through the pioneer era (with detailed and accessible explanations of the materials used) and the jet age. A huge undertaking!
In addition to innovations and developments in aeronautics, Matt Ralphs names the most iconic models of their time, as well as female aviators (such as Amelia Earhart) and male aviators (such as Charles Lindbergh) who made history. All this is accompanied by superb illustrations by Dieter Braun, which will delight adults as well!
