Daniel Bechennec has illustrated many cover pages of the magazine “Le Fana de l’Aviation”. A beautiful book retraces this collaboration and pays him a heartfelt tribute…

If you are a regular reader of this section, you will certainly remember some of them: Daniel Bechennec has drawn a multitude of legendary cover pages of the magazine for about four decades. It is therefore quite natural for Editions Casa (a subsidiary of Editions Larivière, which owns the magazine) to pay tribute to him with an amazing “artbook”. This illustrated book features, almost entirely, the drawings that had made the front page of this must-read monthly magazine of the die-hard fans of aviation, “Le Fana de l’Aviation”.

Daniel Bechennec’s works are presented in this 220-page large-format book, in chronological order beginning with the 1910s. The illustrator has captured aircraft from all the different eras. On the technical side, we discover how the author moved from gouache painting using a short-bristle brush (from the 1970s to the 1990s) to the more recent use of digital technology – not to mention the work done with oil painting on canvas.

Regarding the presentation of the works, the publisher and the author have chosen to retrace the illustrator’s career by presenting these famous cover pages in an original way. The reader can thus discover them in large format without any explanation. This is followed by a smaller scale reproduction accompanied by an explanation written by the author describing his approach. Spitfire, Triton, Rafale, and many more. The most legendary aircraft are yours to discover!
