Astronaut Jean-Loup Chrétien has written an autobiography in which he opens up and offers insightful reflections for future generations.

Forever the first! As the very first Frenchman to don an astronaut’s spacesuit in 1982, during a Franco-Soviet mission, and the first non-Russian and non-American to perform a spacewalk, Jean-Loup Chrétien has written an autobiography titled “Itinéraires dans les étoiles.” This is an opportunity for the famous astronaut to look back on a multifaceted career—as long as those facets don’t quite touch the ground.

Air Force general, fighter pilot—notably at the controls of the Mirage III—patron of the Patrouille de France, lecturer… Jean-Loup Chrétien’s professional life, straddling France and the United States, Earth and space, is a constant questioning of what is possible, feasible, conceivable—and, to some, downright crazy…

Always in search of challenges, he has always dreamed (and continues to do so) on a grand scale—from Brittany, where he grew up, all the way to the Milky Way, where he allowed himself to play the organ (aboard the “Challenger” shuttle), becoming one of the world’s pioneers in the race to the stars. Here, he opens up for the first time, making the release of this autobiography an event in its own right.
