The time between 1914-1918 and 1939-1945 is not just a matter of years that have passed and a palpably tense international political context… These two decades also saw aviation enter into its operational phase, as it were, with the first scheduled commercial flights (the very first was in 1914), with no end to records being set on both sides of the Atlantic and names that have gone down in history!

This pivotal era touched industry, trade, and art, cementing the place of aviation in modern society and irreversibly thrusting humanity into the “modernity” of the 20th century. In other words, a new facet of “culture” in every sense of the word!

The book focuses on twenty years during which man’s relationship with time (speed) and space (altitude) was forever changed, with a newfound ambition to rule the skies that was to materialize in the battles of the Second World War. But that’s a story for another time…
