Liberty Bessie: “Un pilote de l’Alabama” is a comic book written by Pierre-Roland Saint-Dizier, first published on May 2, 2019. This comic book tells the story of a young black woman who fights to become a pilot in segregated America.

The story starts by introducing the heroine, who we quickly come to understand dreams of getting her pilot’s license. The story then switches to the day that she receives her father’s medal by mail; he disappeared while flying in Europe. Bessie decides to launch her own investigation into his disappearance by embarking on her own adventure…

Throughout this tale of aviation, Bessie takes us on a journey through the history of aviation at the end of the 1940s. The author takes inspiration from the military exploits of a group of African-American military pilots known as the Tuskegee Airmen, who played a key role in World War II.

This comic book is a magnificent tribute to all the pilots who fought to make their dream come true against all odds.
