This documentary kind comic book dives into the daily life of the French Navy flagship: the Charles de Gaulle aircraft carrier.

June 2019. Raynal Pellicer boards the Charles de Gaulle, the first nuclear-powered surface combat ship built in Europe. The aircraft carrier is in the Indian Ocean as part of the Clémenceau mission. The author and filmmaker spent three weeks on board taking photos and videos, but also meeting the people (there are 2,000 of them on board) who keep the ship moving forward on a daily basis: pilots (of the Rafale Marine in particular), nuclear engineers, cooks, sailors, doctors, meteorologists… and even a chaplain! In all, some fifty professions can be found on board.

What for? With his drawing partner Titwane, Raynal Pellicer narrates the restless life a floating city, a society of the oceans in its own right… In other words, an ensemble where the cohesion of the teams, human relations and the noblest maritime traditions take over any other consideration. Highlighted by a refined layout, in the style of a watercolor sketch taken from life. As a reminder, the “Charles de Gaulle” has been the flagship of the French Navy since 1994, more than a quarter of a century…
